Most camera clubs/photographic societies in the UK (and indeed throughout the world) hold a series of competitions throughout the year. These are judged by an experienced photographer approved to be qualified to judge by the Federation to which his/her club is affiliated. The majority opinion is that this sets standards that are perceived as good club photography. Individual clubs are able to organise their competitions as they think fit usually with the award of certificates and trophies to thos with the highest marks.
The Royal Photographic Society and the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain separately provide the opportunity for photographers to earn distinctions by which a selection of work is submitted for approval by a panel of judges.
